Organic Lawn Care / Aeration

Aeration & Overseeding

Aeration is essential for proper root growth and particularly important in the dense clay soils of southeast Wisconsin. Weeds thrive in compacted soils and turf roots become stunted. Aeration can be done anytime the turf is actively growing and is usually done spring or fall, though sports fields may be aerated several times a year. Frequency of aeration depends on your soil profile, the amount of foot traffic and the length of time you have been on an organic program. Typically, aeration is done the first few years on an organic program and then the frequency can be backed off as soils improve.

Overseeding- spreading fresh grass seed on top of existing turf- produces turf that resists weed colonization. Bare soil is literally an open invitation for mother nature to fill in with a weed. Overseeding is best done in the fall, and we typically recommend a blend that is high is fescues which need less water and fertilizer than Kentucky Bluegrass. We seed at an aggressive rate to proactively develop the desired quality of turf. Overseeding should be followed by regular watering for maximum germination. We can discuss the exact overseeding strategy for your property during our initial consultation.
